Discovering Wonder in Ukraine's Carpathian Mountains

When I first arrived in Yaremche, Ukraine, as an American Peace Corps volunteer, I did not 

expect was to fall in love with a place that would forever change how I think about nature, education, and the power of curiosity.

Nestled in the heart of the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains, Yaremche is home to the Carpathian National Nature Park, one of Ukraine's oldest and most treasured protected areas. The park safeguards ancient forests, mountain rivers, waterfalls, wildlife habitats, and breathtaking landscapes that attract visitors from across Ukraine and beyond. Yet the park's greatest asset is not only its natural beauty. It is the people who dedicate themselves to protecting it and the children who come to discover it. 

During my time working with the park, I had the opportunity to meet passionate educators, scientists, rangers, and community leaders committed to inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. I watched school groups eagerly explore forest trails, ask questions about plants and animals, and experience the excitement of learning outdoors. For many children, a visit to the park is far more than a field trip, it is an opportunity to develop a lifelong connection with nature.

That is why the proposed Wildly Curious Forest Trail is such an exciting project. The trail will transform a simple walk into an immersive learning adventure. 

The impact of this project extends far beyond a single visit. Research consistently shows that children who spend time in nature are more likely to develop environmental awareness, curiosity, and a desire to protect the world around them.
